Shooting

18
  • Balance: Feet shoulder width apart.  The foot of the hand you shoot with should be slightly forward.  Your knees should be bent.  You should feel stable against the ground, no one should be able to tip you over.
  • Eyes: Find a spot on the rim.  Front, middle, back…doesn’t matter as long as you constantly pick that same spot.  I personally chose the back of the rim because more of my shots fell short.  The important thing is pick a place and stay there.
  • Elbow: Do what’s comfortable, many coaches will tell you to keep your elbow in and align it your forearm straight with the hoop.  You don’t have to listen to that advice, just keep your elbow where you feel most comfortable…don’t stress if your elbow is sticking out a bit.
  • Follow Through: After you shoot, your arm should be fully extended, wrist bent forward and downward.  Your arm and wrist should look like a goose neck.

Muscle Memory Shooting:

  • Using your right hand only (left hand by your side), shoot 15 times – 3 feet away from the basket.
  • Using your left hand only (right hand by your side), shoot 15 times – 3 feet away from the basket.
  • Repeat 3 times each side

Mikan Drill

    • Start under the basket, as if you were going to take a layup
    • Jump off your left leg and shoot a right handed shot against the backboard
    • Retrieve the ball and in the same motion jump off your right foot and shoot with your left hand
    • Shoot 15 shots from each side
    • Repeat 3 times

Distance shooting

  • Start with muscle memory shooting from the middle of the rim – shoot 10 shots
  • After you shoot 10 shots, step back one step and shoot another 10 shots
  • If you make 6/10 then step back a step.  If you don’t make 6 out of 10 then shoot another 10 shots
  • If you don’t make 6/10 twice then you will start over at the first spot
  • The goal is to get as farther away as possible (your range)
  • After you miss the 6 out of 10 shots three times, the drill/game is over

Dribble and Pop

  • Set up chair at each end of the free throw line
  • Start at half court and dribble w/ your right hand to the chair
  • Stop w/ two feet, square up, be balanced (don’t fall forward) and shoot
  • Repeat 10 times on each side (left side, left handed dribble).
  • Act like the chair is a defender and get your shot off quickly

Spot up jumper

  • Start on the baseline and toss the ball w/ a spin to yourself a few feet away
  • Catch and shoot in one motion
  • Retrieve the ball and dribble to where you just shot from
  • Toss the ball w/ a spin to yourself a few feet away
  • Catch and shoot in one motion
  • Repeat this until you get to the other baseline
